I have a simple question: Why?
well, for us here,
- we are first hoping to use GeoServer for taking advantage of its
capabilities. its high-quality support for OGC standards
is really important.
- we are also willing to offer either user or guest_admin priveleges as
appropriate for community participants who have the expertise
and need to help set up GeoServer properly.
- this is also a crawl-before-walk-before-run approach. the oam community
*really needs to get licensing and permissions issues squared away.*
we're hoping to see a trial period where uploads are organized and
mediated using GeoServer support
The entire design behind that document is to make serving files as simple
and lightweight as possible. Since you have to store the images on disk,
is there some reason not to just use a file-based webserver (lighttpd,
apache, etc.) to serve the raw files, rather than using GeoServer as a
primary access point?
we're certainly willing to support those also, eventually, as a trial or
production process, if community consensus is behind it.
Why involve GeoServer in that role at all?
well, here are things we're not ready to do at this point:
- give superuser sysadmin access to just anyone outside of NPS
- build something that isn't consensus based, or something unrepeatable
- host files of questionable (or illegal, or unknown) provenance on a
government system. incidentally wasn't that issue a major
contributing cause for prior incarnation of OAM hitting the wall?
- step blindly into the unknown, without initial results to consider
Disclaimer: we're not long-term GeoServer users or bigots. but we did
offer a plan (linked in past email) that everyone seemed to agree with.
GeoServer would seem to offer a lot of advantages to get started.
i'm hoping that together we can take a lot of short steps, one at
a time, rather than running into a cul de sac (or over a cliff).

thanks for this important question... i hope this answer is helpful.
we're not trying to force an answer, but want to move forward
carefully to make sure this resource grows into what we all hope for.
ongoing dialog is welcome.

thanks for these pointers too Ariel. we will make no rash moves and
indeed are hoping for some kind of group teleconference to reset
how we're going forward together.
all the best, Don
