It might be a good idea to give user a choice to select an editor he wants, but add some recommendations based on browser/platform. Something like putting big red "Recommended" label near iD on Chrome or on systems without flash player installed, and the same label to P2 on Firefox, IE, Opera and the like. This way new users who do not know what to choose will have some guidance and get the best (and fast) user experience, and experienced users will choose what they like best.
Yes, from my experience Opera shows iD very slowly compared to Potlach2 (and iD on Chrome on the same machine).
