I have neither Java 6 nor 7 but ""java-1.7.0-openjdk". Latest JOSM is happy with it so I assumed it is pretty much Java 7 but maybe there are differences between various Java 7 versions and only some of them support the longer keys - which would explain the discrepancies between the FAQ and what various people are seeing.
