Most of the people who message me are blind with older phones and so don't
use those characters while the 2 sighted people that message me hate
technology and are not going to go looking for those graphic characters on
their phones

I've found people are just fine if you put the word smile, chuckle, frown
etc... in your messages. So the emoticons may be nice but the words are
just as good. I tell people when they send me stuff to use the words in
place of typing any emoticons!

I don't think the smiley table is in the older firmware.
yes, the smilies table only introduce in firmware 071.004. is a bonus
given by nokia to some s60 9.3 devices such as e72, e52 and
etc.
