Look, I am not saying that because of personal preferences. We are really
easy -- it is trivial for us to create a custom version of Tapestry that
works with the 2.1 Servet API. We have already done something like that on a
number of occasions (our current distribution of choice is a modified 2.2,
for example), so this is not a problem for us at all.

My concern is that there are a lot of really major clients out there who are
stuck with 2.1 for various reasons. In fact, the bigger the client, the more
likely it is that they use outdated software in my personal observation. And
you cannot really tell a major financial institution, for example, that
their setup is outdated and they have to upgrade to run your software. They
will tell you to go to hell, instead. In other words, this really has the
potential to hurt Tapestry's adoption -- very few people can afford to do
what we've done, and a lot of bad press could be generated over it. Having
separate distributions for the 2.1 and 2.3 Servlet APIs is also the last
thing that we need.

As I said earlier, I think the ideal compromise would be to have only
non-essential parts of Tapestry (such as Tapestry Lite) dependent on 2.3,
but keep the Tapestry core working fine with 2.1. If I understand correctly
Howard, 2.3 functionality is only needed for Tapestry Lite anyway. This
approach would at least turn the problem from a critical one, into one with
a relatively easy workaround.

Does this make more sense now?
