Not really, that's why I called it accidental over-engineering :-)
And like I said, when the task viewer is generalized to show both
tasks and (sub)notes then it does make sense. I can imagine having
tasks with a subnote that contains contact information for people
involved with the task. In that case being able to assign that subnote
to the "contact" category would make sense to me.

I do enjoy discussing this stuff and I like it that you challenge the
way things are. The unlimited hierarchical structures are the "reason
d'etre" of Task Coach. I like it that I can always split up a task
into subtasks and I often do.

Yes. It has "total categories" A and B. Because the subnotes are not
displayed in the task viewer this isn't very visible at the moment,
but the same goes for subtasks. If a task A belongs to category C then
all subtasks of A have C in their "total categories". Make the "total
categories" column visible to see this.

Its own category is C and its total categories are A, B and C. Again,
check this out for subtasks where it is easier to make this visible by
turning on the "categories" and "total categories" columns in the task
viewer.
