I get the wider blue line in the paragraph starting with "How did you reply," and I get the narrow blue line in the text following that.

Can you articulate a better way to show the "1st generation" and "second generation" quoted sections?  Or can you tell us how another mail program might show it?  I don't mind what we have here, but I wonder how other programs might show the same.

The first thins is why should it be any different? The Bat!

should be able to take whatever is entered and do what it needs to.

It should have an HTML editor that works the same way as MicroEd does in that it colours and marks quoted text, ignores the signature and lets you break into and edit the quoted text just as MicroEd does.

I know that it would be a lot of work, but you asked :-)

It should not be a case of doing things differently just because the final message format will be different.

You can tell I am not a programming person by my question, but still am trying to understand your concern.  Sorry if I appear "dense."

And, because you are an Aussie, here is a link to Liam Clancy singing an Aussie song that you might enjoy:

I saw Liam Clancy (and his brothers, and Tommy Makem) in concert back in grad school in 1966.  And I later saw him and Tommy Makem in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in about 1988.
