It's this:

Your test goes wrong because you're testing it in a vacuum.

Smart tabs align text *to the gaps in the line above*.

If you type tabs with no guide line, it will make no sense.

Enter a line of headings, spaced like you want them.

*Now* use tabs on the *next* (and subsequent) lines.

Your tab stops line up with your column headings.

And that's what Smart tabs are supposed to do for you.

Is that any clearer?
