I would call this a side benefit that comes from indirect use of the
feature. It's called colour groups, right. :)

Well, you can't really make a message have two different colours at
the same time since this is a visual thing. This is why the
limitation exists.

Because it's the colour groups feature that you're trying to make do
something it's not specifically designed to do, though its intended
purpose is related to what you wish. It will allow you to assign
messages to groups but only through colours being the groups common
attribute and a message can't be coloured in more than one way since
the way you know that it belongs to a particular group is through
its colour. I know that you create colour groups without really
assigning colours and therefore wish to assign a single message to
more than one group, but this is clearly not the intended purpose of
the feature.
