Hi Wayne,

On or about Monday, January 20, 2003 at 10:47:43GMT -0800 (which
was 1:47 PM in the tropics where I live) Wayne Black inquired:

S>> My MAIL folder presently stands at 9.56 GB (10,269,755,860 bytes)
S>> TB! still runs like clockwork, although the exit mailbox
S>> compression can take ten minutes or more ;-)

WB> Is there a way to disable the "exit mailbox compression"?

I'd be interested in an answer to this too! There is a checkbox
for this in each account, and each message folder under the
account (when you create it. I have the checkboxes all cleared,
but still get it happening when I exit, unless I am shutting down
WIN2K, in which case the O/S seems to truncate the operation. The
next time I open TB! after a shutdown or reboot, it takes a while
to re-index the message folders, as it seems to have been
corrupted. The operation has not failed to correct it once (YET)
but I fear there may be repurcussions if the process gets
interrupted at a critical juncture some future time :-(

WB> I use the Compress All Mailbox function on a fairly regular
WB> basis. And by the way, how many messages does 9.56 GB
WB> represent?

At present it is about 138,000 +/-, with massive amounts of
attachments. I don't store attachments in a separate folder due
to the inherent inability of certain mentally deficient people to
use unique filenames ;-( . What are the rules TB! uses in the
case where you have 240 messages, each with 01.jpg, 02.jpg,
03.jpg all in the same mail storage folder? I know that in the
case of newsgroups, AGENT uses an "auto-increment" feature
(optional). I've been unable to find a reference to this.

WB> I believe the last I remember, Marck had somewhere around
WB> 280,000 messages. I don't think there are *any* email
WB> clients that can handle this kind of volume.

Oh, I think if the database & indexing system is properly
designed (as it does seem to be!) there should be no practical
limit to this capability. Hats off to the designers for having
such a properly designed system!
