Being a developer myself I'd say this falls into the category of " You get your cake and eat it too!". Version 2 is being developed with features that are "new" yet I am sure this will be a "paid" upgrade path for registered 1.xxx users however you still get further development and improvement on v1.xxx. In most cases this is an unheard of development and progression cycle as most companies would stop developing a 1.xx series and develop a 2.xx series whereas you pay to upgrade or you stay with a "dead" version.
