Unfortunately, no, but something similar happened with my
IMAP account which started in v2.12 and persisted more
extremely in v3 ... everytime I fetched mail, or sent
mail, it generated another inbox.1 or sent.1  ... if I
went to 'manage folders' (where those folders didn't
show), it would get rid of them, but some of my mail
disappeared ... I'm trying to remember if I ran
maintenance to try to correct a different problem, I think
I did ... but it didn't run itself.

My remedy is probably not useful to you; my mail server
allowed me to go to POP mail, which was really no remedy.
