This is what I did, running v. 1.62 in a situation similar to yours.

Speaking with complete frankness, I say there are none.

I upgraded to v. 2.6 and further within 2.xx to get Smiley and
Roguemoticon capability.

I upgraded to 3.0 and further to get a simpler, more understandable
way to make filters.

From 3.0.1.33 on, I have been moving up out of feelings of:

1) Loyalty to a company and e-mail program that have truly done well
   by me.
2) Curiosity about what will come next.
3) The sense of adventure and community that life as a beta tester for
   my favorite e-mail program, The Bat!, is giving me.
