It could be that the mailserver is trying to verify the client using
the ident protocol. If that's the case, the server's ident request
ends at your router (to the router it's an outside-initiated
connection that is not "port-forwarded" anywhere, so it drops the
packet). If the server doesn't get a response, usually after a timeout
it just ignores the failed request and continues with POP3 or IMAP,
authenticating there.

To check whether this is the problem in your case just add a port
forwarding rule to your router: forward all packets to port 113 to the
machine running TheBat. Also, disable any firewall you might have
running on the machine. If the delay is gone then, you have at least
identified the problem.

If so, you have more than one option:

a) You may be able to configure your router not to silently drop
packets to port 113 but to return "port closed". The server will then
"catch on" without the delay that no ident server is running on your
system and continue like it does now after the delay.

b) You can leave the port forwarding rule in place and either
configure the firewall on your machine to reject (return "port
closed", not drop) the packet or simply to allow the inbound to reach
port 113 on your machine permanently. If TheBat is sporting an ident
server, it will answer the request, if not, Windows' default answer
will be "port closed", which means no application is listening on that
port. Again, the asking server will not have to go into timeout but
gets its answer instantly.

Of course, by opening up the port on your router you will be
detectable by an attacker doing portscans, which is not inherently
dangerous by itself but will at least allow the attacker to detect
that "something" is there on this IP. But either way, if you want to
avoid the delay, the server must get an answer to his request, either
positive or negative.
