That isn't how I've archived. I have an account, called dummy account, where I have a set of folders for archiving into. It is password protected, so most of the time anything I do with folders, such as compacting on closure, or searching, etc, doesn't access those folders. The password is easy to remember ('password') because it's just to keep the archived material out of the way unless I need it. So I never move folders, just contents.
