I've got a soft spot for Mikrotik's RouterBoard hardware, mostly from

software (a modified Linux with a decent Windows GUI), for sixty
dollars, is a pretty good bargain.

These boxes are a lot better than people expect and make for excellent home routers for those that like to tinker - they are incredibly flexible for configurations.

That being said, they do have their quirks to them and can be frustrating when you hit it (ie: don't expect cisco tac). But that only crops up in rare situations these days.

The hardware is a fairly standard MIPS-BE board; I've never done so,
but you could probably put your own favorite embedded OS on there, in
lieu of their version of Linux.

Had a friend try successfully for a project - according to him the biggest issue was the lack of a floating point chip (it gets emulated very slowly), so your code needs to take that into account.

Cheers,
 Ross.
