One question. When we look at a resistor, how are we supposed to know if it is a 4 band resistor with the 5th band meaning nothing, or if it is a 5 band resistor with the 5th band being important? Doesn't seem to make too much sense.

Jay,

Someone finally replied with the correct value, and sure enough
it is 680 Ohms. One more thing to remember when checking resistors.
Red forth band means 2% tolerance (and the fifth band doesn't
really matter in most cases, I guess).

Hi Jay,

Thanks for your advice. Someone suggested that it may be 680 Ohm (with
the red indicating 2% - common with RCA flameproof) and I suppose you
would disregard the white band.

Andrews Electronics has one in stock, so I ordered it and will check
the resistance tomorrow when I get it. I hope it's very rare that
those selected resistors are used.

Panasonic PV-DM2799
27" TV-DVD-VCR

The SMPS is not running and I found an open resistor, and
a shorted STRG6651 power converter chip. D1508 was also
shorted.

Scraping the coating off of one side of the 1/4W resistor,
I was able to measure as high as 100 Ohms from each end to
the break in the center.

It's not at all burnt, but ~200 Ohms or so isn't even close
to the color code (any way I read it). My trick didn't work
this time!

The colors on the resistor are as follows:
BLUE - GRAY - BROWN - RED - WHITE

or it could be read:
WHITE - RED - BROWN - GRAY - BLUE

The STRG6651 reads 5 Ohms from pin 3 to pin 4 so I figure
it's toast.
