Robin! Resolving this complex problem will require many back and forth tests.
Please contact us on IRC channel #olpc-help on freenode.net, by visiting http://webchat.freenode.net/ and enter channels name of #olpc-help. If you cannot do that, then it will take several back and forth mails, and perhaps many needless questions. On the assumption that you cannot use IRC, here are the questions I have: 1. what is the serial number of this laptop? You will find that underneath the battery in the centre of the compartment. 2. what version of OpenFirmware is currently installed? Instructions for finding that can be found in the section "Which Firmware Do You Have?" on the Wiki page: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Firmware_q2e45#Which_Firmware_Do_You_Have.3F 3. is the laptop secured? The laptop is secured if you cannot reach the ok prompt after trying all available methods. Instructions for reaching the ok prompt can be found on the Wiki page: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Ok 4. if the answer to question 3 above is "yes", and the answer to question 2 above is less than Q2E41 or unknown, then please upgrade to Q2E41 using the instructions in the section "Using a USB flash drive and another computer" on the Wiki page: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Upgrading_firmware#Using_a_USB_flash_drive_and_another_computer Report back with your progress on these questions.
