The heat spreader is a piece of metal that conducts heat away from the CPU. If it is not touching the CPU properly, the CPU will get hot faster when it is executing a lot of instructions, and may eventually enter a lower-clock-speed mode to prevent overheating.

The heat spreader test attempts to detect this situation by measuring the rate of temperature rise. It idles the CPU for 5 seconds to let the temperature fall, then runs for 5 seconds. If the temperature rises by more than 8 degrees C during the 5-second on period, a failure is declared.

Additional Information:
1) I figured out why it was stuck on the lid switch portion of the test. It needed me to close the screen and I figured out that I needed to put the screen in ebook format to do the ebook switch. 2) I am testing with two XO 1.5s. One passes the heat spreader test, the other doesn't. What in the world is a heat spreader test?

Error message on failing XO:

"...temperature rose 11 degrees C - FAIL
Selftest failed. Return code = -1"

????

When I tried the graphical test option to test all of the devices this is what
I got:

"
Testing int:0
SD card is locked
Selftest failed. Return code =-1
... Press any key to proceed ...
"

Every thing else seems ok except for the heat spreader test error and the above error on the laptops. Weird thing though is that the information on battery test seem to flash for a millisecond. I only saw this when I kept pressing the battery icon and not getting anything except "battery" text on the bottom.

Help please!
Thank you,
Cherry

    Anyone else seeing this?

I have a 10.1.2 build on my 1.5. I was trying the instructions for the
hardware self-test on the following page:
    http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO_Self_Test

I was holding the left side arrow of the rocker game key while I click on
the power button. First of all, it
doesn't go through the same sequence that was stated on the instructions of
that page. It does the following
    before it freezes:

    "
    Testing /l...@0
    Flashing LEDS
    RSSI: 75 SSID: LaFleur_Network Channel:1
    RSSI...(and on and on)

    Okay
    Testing /switc...@0
    Activate lid switch

    "

Then it's stuck on the this state and doesn't proceed. Please advice.
Thanks!
