i use texshop on mac os x, but this:

is as much gui as tex can have a gui, i guess. :)

whatever, there's a nice installer for tex on os x (thomas 
posted the link already):

the initial download is 60mb, and there's something called 
"i-installer", which is used to keep your installation 
up-to-date.

if you have bbedit (a plaintext editor), then i'd recommend 
getting the tex-plugin:
