Thanks to those who responded, despite the bogus url I provided. You confirmed that I wasn't the only one who couldn't search musixdoc.pdf.
I've noticed that what appears to distinguish it from all the other nearby PDFs is that according to document properties in Acrobat, it was produced with dvips+AFPL Ghostscript 8.53. The other PDFs at hand were made with either an earlier or later version of Ghostscript. Then I remembered that I may have produced it on a little-used computer. Upon checking that PC, I saw that indeed it produced PDFs with the same Ghostscript version, and the same unsearchability. Case closed.
