Acronis True Image 9 has worked perfectly for me with X31, T61 and T400
Always with XP of course.

Did you initially format the new drive *in* the ThinkPad? Failure to do
this is a major reason clones fail.
Having had lots of problems with drive cloning myself, the only approace
that has been 100% effective for me has been to (a) backup (not clone) the
old drive, (b) format the new drive in the ThinkPad and use the system
installation disks to create a working OS on it; and (c) restore the
backiup onto the new drive.

Subject: [Thinkpad] drive cloning
I just got a new Fujistu 500gb drive to replace a failing 320gb drive in
my x61s. I used Acronis Home to clone the drive via a USB enclosure.
When I put the new drive into the computer and started up, the bios found
it, but then nothing happened. All I got was a cursor blinking in the
upper left corner after the bios startup and bios security sign-on. I
tried using the rescue function of a Windows install CD, but it couldn't
see the new drive.
The new drive seems to otherwise work. When I boot with the old drive
and put the new drive in the USB enclosure, I can see all the files.
I have the feeling I'm missing something obvious. Any suggestions?
