But I do worry about the battery -- I'm guessing it's not compatible with X200 series batteries? ie, it'll probably be flaky in about 1.5 years, and then what?

My X301 came with the 6-cell battery. I didn't like that (makes the front side of the X301 higher than necessary), so I ordered the thinner 3-cell battery, which I'm using most of the time. I do take the bigger battery with me for longer trips and I use it if/when I run out of juice on the 3-cell battery. If you are concerned about battery availability, just buy a spare one upfront. But I don't see why they wouldn't be available 3-4 years from now. These units are still being sold new with a three-year warranty, so Lenovo must have parts for them for years to come.

Is the X301 screen nicer than the X201? (not size, but appearance. I also find the X201 to have a strangely large bezel...)

I can't compare with the X201, because I haven't seen it side-by-side with the X301. I find the display of the X301 adequate for my needs and my eyes. I was afraid the resolution would be to high for my old eyes (I'm 50 and short-sighted, but I still cope with single-focus glasses), but I've had no problem with it. I like the fact the display is matte (I find it easier on my eyes when looking at it several hours in a row).

Cheers, Dominique
