James, Not that I'm about to teach you of all people any new tricks, but...
I've ran into situations on T42/p and T43/p that resembled what you are describing and the actual sticking part was over the GPU, not just CPU. Lifting the fan gently with a very thin blade from that (GPU) end got me where I needed to be in all cases but one. On some of them I had to scrape the goop/funk off with the top of the blade... Seriously, it's not just stuck because of dried heatsink compound, it's glued on. Looks like I'll be needing a new MB for this puppy. Had a very needy and worthy new non-profit home for it too.
