Thanks to all who replied and especially to George who made me realize I was looking at the GPU and not the CPU. Yeah, it wasn't glued, just a case of a DPO having replaced the fan previously and not taking the plastic sheet off the rubber compound over the GPU area. I knew someone had been under the hood of this puppy previously by the number of missing and mismatched screws holding the keyboard and palmrest in place. Anyway, no I haven't completely entered my dotage yet and the old fan only came loose after being bent at a ninety degree angle to the MB and twisted. Left a great deal of smudge on the GPU that required scraping to remove. The good news is that the unit is up and running and will be heading to its new home as soon as I finish re-installing XP-Pro on it and running all the updates.
