I know your email is old, but I want to comment on it, anyway.
If Microsoft ever tries to force me to use MS products to get my Hotmail, then I'll drop Hotmail immediately!! As more and more people move away from Windows to Linux, BSD, Mac (OS X is BSD Unix customized by Apple for their hardware), and other operating systems, I have less and less reason to use Windows. Personally, I could do without Windows right now and I am; I'm on Linux doing this email. I've got Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and if they run amok or run me off, I've always got my ISP. No reason to let any of these companies hold us hostage. For that matter, I could setup my own mail server and do without any of them. Or turn off the machines and never have to worry about it. There's life beyond computers........ speaking of which, it's time to get away from behind the screen and go enjoy real life.
