Eugene,

I've been using Tbird and the Webmail extensions on Linux and Windows for years, and except for MSN/Hotmail and Yahoo! changing their webmail websites, etc., I've been very happy with the Webmail extensions. Right now I'm emailing you from TB/Webmail extensions running under Jaunty Jackalope (Ubuntu 9.04).

I'm sure you're going to be much happier running Linux. For one thing, on the same hardware it runs much faster than MS Windows and much more reliably. It's no surprise that the world's supercomputers are now clustered Linux machines, and a lot of the electronics from cell phones to the PROMS in Sun Servers are now using Linux.

I don't have to worry about Windows viruses anymore, they can't execute on Linux as long as I don't install and setup any of the Windows emulators, such as WINE; or, Windows running under a virtual machine, which again, I would never set up. One of my machines is a multi-boot box with 2 hard drives: one drive partitioned in 2 with Win98 and WinXP SP3, and the other drive (D:) in that machine has SUSE Linux on it.

I have an old machine here w/an Intel Celeron 500 Mhz, 256 MB RAM, and an old 5400 rpm 6 GB hard drive running CentOS Linux and that old machine could not even run Windows 98 without crashing; now it's running an enterprise grade server operating system.

I switched my girlfriend to Linux years ago and she's no computer geek, but she's much happier running Linux.

Using the Webmail extensions under Linux I never have to worry about an anti-virus mail scanner causing conflicts, and there's no time or resources wasted on viruses that are harmless under straight Linux.

There's a good Linux User's Group in Google Groups I recommend joining for Linux help, and also sign-up on: http://www.linuxquestions.org, one of the best Linux support sites (forums) on the web.

John,

Hardy Heron version being installed here.

Yahoo is pairing up with MS and probably one of the reason why we are
having a lot problems with it as they are constantly changing to meet
MS requirements. Personally MS demands for money everytime I turn
around has driven me away to what appears to be much better operating
system. I just got relearn somethings that I got lazy on for using MS
Windows. I never like the lack of control that I had.

Matter of Fact, the Hotmail issue is why I went search for a
replacement email clients. I had all but gave up on my Netzero account
as I am on their free service and they were forcing me to use webmail
only to access my emails eating up my online time. I found TB and
PopPeeper which between both I can use all my email accounts and have
deleted the MS stuff from my system. I only keeping the IE6 as there
is a few sites that just don't cooperate with Firefox yet.

And John life is better away from the computers, a lot less heachaches
in general.

I know your email is old, but I want to comment on it, anyway.

If Microsoft ever tries to force me to use MS products to get my
Hotmail, then I'll drop Hotmail immediately!!  As more and more people
move away from Windows to Linux, BSD, Mac (OS X is BSD Unix customized
by Apple for their hardware), and other operating systems, I have less
and less reason to use Windows. Personally, I could do without Windows
right now and I am; I'm on Linux doing this email.

I've got Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and if they run amok or run me off, I've
always got my ISP.  No reason to let any of these companies hold us
hostage.  For that matter, I could setup my own mail server and do
without any of them.  Or turn off the machines and never have to worry
about it.  There's life beyond computers........   speaking of which,
it's time to get away from behind the screen and go enjoy real life.

Till next time,

John

you have any information you can impart regarding what is going to
happen tomorrow, when MS says that OE needs to be set to POP?

Thanks!
