If I apply coretweaks but don't set any tiddlers to excludeMissing, then AutoSave behaves correctly. I'd also found that the HTMLArea editor was failing to show its wysiwyg mode correctly after applying core tweaks - showing the html version instead.
I now suspect that the way I've set the excludeMissing tags is causing the problem and will investigate further.
