Peter Yes, you can type in a new fieldname and add it. Field names have naming rules but single or hyphenated words are fine.
Perhaps you can decide if a tiddler has the author field then its a book and leave the tags for your relationships. I can share a bundle of example tiddlers if you want a quick answer but you will learn more on your own.
