Hi,
I used Wayne's scripts at http://www.schlitt.net/scripts/ntp/index.html and
they were written some years ago.
They give you some insight in what is happening.
But be careful, because they give you high loads at peak times.
Yesterday I have "upped" my cable connection to 8000/1500 and decided to
change my net speed at the manage page to 1.5 Mbit and left my home for
work.
When I got back I first wanted to see my monitoring pages. Well I was not
happy with what I saw. I was in the pool for hours and the scripts gave me
these results:
Estimated active ntp pool clients: 31383
Estimated abusive ntp pool clients: 57
Estimated inactive ntp pool clients: 163269
Total ntp pool clients being tracked: 194652
Note: NTP is a stateless and connectionless (UDP based) protocol, so
exact numbers can't be determined.
5027789 ntp requests, in total, have been seen since 09/15/07 23:01:33
1547996 (30.8%) are from clients that are still active.
Long term request rate: 0.052 seconds between requests (19.11 req/sec)
Long term bandwidth in: 1.418 KBytes/s 11.346 Kbits/s
Long term bandwidth in: 3.506 GB/month 28.046 Gb/month
Current request rate: 0.006 seconds between requests (167.74 req/sec)
Current bandwidth in: 12.449 KBytes/s 99.595 Kbits/s
Current bandwidth in: 30.774 GB/month 246.192 Gb/month
(NTP packets are usually 76 bytes, UDP overhead included, in each
direction.)
My mrtg graphs showed me peaks of 10000 packets/minute (derived from
iostats, received packets), so this matches with 167 req/sec from Wayne's
scripts.
Load on my system was very high and I decided to bring back the net speed to
768 Kbit. My system stayed in the pool for hours after that and was there
for totally 10 hours with these high rates.
It was a good experiment and I felt "important" serving time to 200000 users
;-) (must be at least 5% of total pool users).
My log file didn't show errors by the way.
