[time] What stratum am I?

How does one calculate what stratum their NTP server is? I'm syncing off 
four other servers, 3 of which are stratum one (according to ntpq) and the 
fourth is stratum 4. I'm paired (whatever the * is called) with a stratum 1 
currently. Is it based on who your paired with, or is it an aggregate of 
all the servers?
