Yes, thunderbird and the OpenOffice report designer are available on Odoo. Thunderbird connects only when you click on the "Synchronize" button. So, if you synchronize Thunderbird, it's counted as a connection but if you just read your email they are no connection to Open ERP.
We plan to add more external tools to Odoo within the next months: * Outlook plugin, * Some eCommerce (Joomla, Magento, ...), * VOIP Server, ...
