I feel exactly the same about this. I can make the newsgroups available as
MBOX files in SourceForge downloads section. All mail clients can (that I
know of) import MBOX files. So searching should then be possible.

Alternatively (and something I have been wanting to do for ages) is write
some CGI app that can do full text search on the news groups, and maybe
incorporate it into the WebNews interface.

The big benefit of NNTP (news groups) is that as soon as any new person
subscribes to a newsgroup, they have access to all previous posts. Mailing
Lists do not, and needs some searchable archive (which SourceForge and
Gmane are currently failing to provide - even though they advertise that
service).

The downside of Mailing Lists (something I only found out now), is that
mailing lists are easy targets for spammers. I keep getting notifications
of spam messages which are blocked and I manually need to act on them and
discard them (so they don't get distributed to all of you). Very annoying!
So currently, mailing lists are causing me more work, not less as I thought
it would. :-(
