The basic handout I use in our research methods class is

I find that the idea of d (standardized
difference between means) is made more meaningful by relating it to the common
language effect size statistic, which, for two-group designs, is the
probability that a randomly selected score from the one population will be
greater than a randomly sampled score from the other distribution.
