There was a discussion not too long ago about this topic on TIPS.

In French, there are some rules, but I could not even begin to name them. But the rules, I believe, have more to do with how you write words, than why they are feminine or masculine.

But then again, nobody expects the language of love to be easy, right?

Dear Jean-Marc,

It's funny how la foi has no "e" on the end and le foie does!

Ah, the vagaries of (French) language!

More seriously, and perhaps related to psychology (perhaps the psychology of language or language learning), what is the basis of masculine and feminine French nouns? Is there any rhyme or reason to it?

Stuart

This one would really work, except that "foi" is feminine (faith) and "foie" is masculine (liver).

Gotta get those genders straigtened up, Annette! ;-)

Actually, last time I hear, Elizabeth was the Queen, and not the King. Therefore, it should go as follows: Instead of /"D¨fendeur de la Foi", one should read //*"D¨fenderesse* de la Foi".

You must know that is only half of her title in Canada. The other half is:

/Elizabeth Deux, par la gr¨ce de Dieu, Reine du Royaume-Uni, du Canada et de ses autres royaumes et territoires, Chef du Commonwealth, D¨fendeur de la Foi./

Can’t you be convicted in some parts of Canada for making such a faux pas?

M¨ oui!
