For
completeness, go with Howell. For clarity (from the students'
perspectives) I'd look at Heiman (the combined method/stats text -- the
stats-only version doesn't go far enough beyond one-way ANOVA, and it never
hurts to reiterate that research designs come from statistical models).
Heiman is the only text I've ever used in any class that spontaneously generates
"this is a good book" sorts of comments from the students. My only
complaint is that he doesn't really use good notation for the more complex
designs, and instead uses words rather than symbols.
