Nancy--and others--please don't mix up all religion with fundamentalism.
Much mainstream religion recognizes that interpretive tradition, conscience, longstanding community practice are also sources of authority, and that any holy text requires interpretation in the light of modern knowledge and the demands of individual conscience.
The religious right has promulgated the notion that the only "true" religion is based on scriptural literalism--and, appallingly, the secular left has completely bought in to it. (Dawkins is one of the worst examples of this.)
My synagogue supports gay marriage, abortion rights, and feminism--and for us, these are things we support *as part of* our Judaism, not in opposition or orthogonal to it. Those of us who believe in G-d would probably say that G-d loves strong, sexual women--He created them!--but the men who tried to discern His will thousands of years ago, and wrote the Bible, were blinded by the prejudices of their times.

I don't understand not being sexual, or only being sexual within a very narrowly circumscribed realm makes me "better". I don't understand why God hates strong, sexual women. And maybe I am going to hell with the rest of them. I don't know. But I am not going to follow any belief system that exhorts me to be a better version of myself if it means that I have to follow someone else's rules for how I express myself sexually. That's deeply personal and my perogative, like what I eat, whether I use drugs, how I raise my child and the rest of it.Nancy MelucciResident List Evil TrollopLong Beach City etc etc.---
