Excellent question

I think this is a good case of bringing in Allport and Ross' classic work
on intrinsic and extrinsic religiousness.

I would suspect the extrinsics are certainly more likely to use religion
as a crutch.  Further, subsequent research in the 40 years since Allport
and Ross' seminal work suggests that extrinsics are less common in
religious communities than intrinsics.
