Annette,
I must admit to having very little patience with folks like your
colleague. If I can't reason with them through a discussion about
what constitutes a science, I usually ask them how familiar they are
with science, in general (I usually ask this with the tone of my
voice implying that I don't believe they are very familiar). I ask
them if the National Academy of Science represents "science." I also
ask them if the journal *SCIENCE* publishes scientific papers. If
they answer in the affirmative, I then say that they apparently are
not aware that NAS and AAAS (the publisher of *SCIENCE*) both have
sections for the behavoral sciences. If we're good enough for these
two groups, why aren't we good enough for some of our colleagues?
