Spencer was Charles Darwin "bull dog" and was very important in defending
the Theory of Evolution (1859).
Spencer lived in England. James lived in one of those developing nations
called The United States of America which by a series of unusual
circumstance becomes important. James book on Psychology was published
around 1890. James models are connected to connectionism and associationism
which is historically linked to Correlational Opponent Processing.

Go to my web site http://turn.to/ai and near the bottom of the page click on
Historical Connections.
The link to James is under the article relating to Connectionism.
