I'll add the same: I've been working full-time since 1992, and have never seen anyone denied a hire or tenure or promotion because of political viewpoint. Not once.
I've seen two people denied tenure because they didn't fit into that department ideologically (two different departments of philosophy), but that had more to do with the sort of philosophy departments they wanted to be, and the sort of philosophy those two studied. But not politics, not once, regardless of the sputum of Horowitz and his ilk. I'm over-generalizing here, but it seems to me they see education as indoctrination and are afraid we'll indoctrinate their kids with an "agenda." Liberals see education as liberating, as mind-opening, the very antithesis of indoctrination. I have colleagues who are thoughtful conservatives (not many, considering I'm in Kansas!), but they tend to be far, far more open-minded than the typical contemporary conservative. But politics doesn't enter into hiring decisions, tenure decisions, or promotion decisions. It doesn't even interfere with our Friday-afternoon gatherings at the local watering hole. m -- Marc Carter, PhD Associate Professor and Chair Department of Psychology College of Arts & Sciences Baker University -- ________________________________ From: Jim Dougan [mailto:jdou...@iwu.edu] Sent: Friday, May 21, 2010 7:44 AM To: Teaching in the Psychological Sciences (TIPS) Subject: [tips] Academic freedom and political views A few days ago, someone posted a question about why university faculty are so liberal. There were some interesting responses. I have been thinking about this for a long time, and eventually I want to write something on the subject for my blog. I have a question for all of you, as a non-random sample of academics: Conservatives like to claim that universities are liberal because they discriminate against conservatives in hiring, promotion, and tenure. For example, they claim that qualified faculty members are denied tenure on the basis of their political beliefs. In my 20+ years as a faculty member, I have never seen that happen. Sure - I have seen some questionable tenure decisions - I suspect we all have - but I have never seen anyone denied tenure or promotion because of their political views. I am curious - have any of you seen such things occur? -- Jim Dougan *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Be sure to see my blog! http://hippieprofessor.com <http://hippieprofessor.com/> --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: marc.car...@bakeru.edu<mailto:marc.car...@bakeru.edu>.
