The one space versus two is more related to typed manuscript versus set type. 
The two spaces were to provide a stronger cue in typed manuscript where each 
letter takes the same amount of space.
When type is set for print the don’t is proportional, with letters like i and l 
taking up less space than a w or m.
This makes words in to more solid blocks so the single space is more visible.
Since word processing is essentially typesetting, one space is appropriate 
unless you are using a font like Courier where all letters take up the same 
space as with a typewriter. This font is useful for Programming as it makes 
line length a cue that you have an error in the code.
There ale also programs that add a half space between phrases to make the gap a 
bit wider. This seems to improve comprehension.
