A backdoor. If you enter Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select on the remote the Advance button (looks like ->|) switches to jumping ahead in 30-second increments instead of jumping to the end. That's just television, a lot of programs have ads at the start and/or end. TiVo just records what is broadcast. Without 30SS turned on the Advance button will jump right to the end of the recording, and the next press jumps to the start. With 30SS on you can hit FF then Advance - each press on Advance jumps forward to the next tick mark, and eventually to the end.
