Thanks to those who responded to my query: Michael, Glen, MZ and 
Jason.  All good information!

What I was hoping to be able to do was share programs between units: 
watch a program "downstairs" that was recorded "upstairs."  Each unit 
would still "call home" over the phone line.

However, I think I will wait until I get a wireless router and then 
link everything together and truly join the 21st century!

I have two phone lines coming into the house; one used primarily for 
voice, and one shared among TiVos, computer, fax machine, and the 
occasional voice call.

Unfortunately, the telephone company says there is a "light short" on 
both lines, one worse than the other.  So far I have not been able to 
isolate the problem(s) in the house wiring.

When I find the problem(s), and wire around it/them, I intend to sign 
up for DSL through my ISP, as they offer it for the same price.
