Just a day or two ago MZ surmised that 90% or so of all tivo issues are the
hard drive failing, which is also my experience. My folks had a modem get
fried by a lightning strike, but other than that, 90%+ of what gets
discussed here also seems to be about hard drive issues.

I have two spare tivo drives, but being SATA I don't think they work in S2
boxes, nor if the software that is on them will work since mine are from an
HD box.

I think modest size ready to install drives are about $100-150, and big
upgrade drives are $250 or so. If you can make your own the drives are
under $100, and if you have a spare hard drive you can donate to the effort
you can set it up for almost nothing as a test, and then buy a suitable
replacement drive to make a final fix.
