Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going with the approach of not blindly 
accepting mail from <> (as the original TMDA setup instructions 
suggested), and so I've added an outgoing filter file:

to-file ~/.tmda/approved/pre-approved bare
to-file ~/.tmda/approved/self-confirmed bare
to * tag envelope dated=10d from bare

I wanted people in some of my whitelists to get plain addresses from me 
(too many people I know write to me by replying to old email, so dated 
addresses might cause problems).

However, I'm not seeing mail outgoing from TMDA (i.e. confirmation 
requests) getting properly tagged yet. They still show 
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]", which is the value of my BOUNCE_ENV_SENDER 
variable.

I will also have to set up tmda-ofmipd eventually, but for now I'd like 
to get TMDA working.
