Siren:
It depends, I think, on your preference. I usually write "Mike said." I've
noticed that GreenWillow usually does "said Mike." A lot of British authors
as well put the tag before the name.

~Im certain the order doesnt matter. The main thing is to avoid sounding repetitious. You know, I sort of launched an experiment with my dialogue tags a while back after hearing from several editors and published writers on some writing lists Im on commenting that editors currently prefer using a simple "said" or "asked" over more colorful verbs. Like Joanna gave as examples here:

.whispered, screamed,
wailed, exclaimed, cried, shouted, etc.

~I think Im about over my "experiment" in simplicity, and will probably begin using more and more of those emotional tags again. Just too repetitious. Besides, how can we possibly write Raphael dialogue without using "snarled", "grunted" and "snapped"?? ;o)

Siren:

And you can get the point across
just fine by the character action:

Jim glared as the sword point flashed toward him. "I wouldn't do that if I
were you." With a flick of his wrist, he easily deflected Andy's strike.

"No! How could you?" Falling to her knees, hysterical, Janie grabbed her
brother's lifeless body, staring up in shock at his murderer.

Like that.

~Yes! Actually I prefer to identify my speaker with action like that.

Does that help?

~Helps me. Gonna go write now! :o)
