-alpha  Potential for bugs and possibly lots of them and/or major ones.
-beta They think that most of the bugs are squashed.
No suffix  stable and should run without major issues.

For your needs the exe package for Win 98 would be a good bet. As for the Mac let Google be your guide. There are several Mac users on the list and I am sure there are some How to sites out there.

I have browsed Jakarta page and have found rather confusing bunch of non-described links with cryptic names for files to download.

1. Is there any information what those files are for or you have to become Tomcat expert without Tomcat in order to know what file to downloads and know what they are for? (I mean do not make assumption that downloading person knows much about capabilities and extensions of the product because it is wrong assumption in general)

2. Where can I get Tomcat that works on MacOS X or Windows (let's say old "good" win98)?
