I put Tomcat in the same place where Apache likes to go: /usr/local. I don't make symbolic links anywhere because they are a pain to clean up later and I like everything to be in one place. But that may just be because I'm from a Windows background where everything (should go)goes in /Program Files.

The RedHat rpm, which BTW is not marked as RedHat in jakarta download area, installs in /var/tomcat4. UnitedLinux 1.0 installs in /opt/jakarta/tomcat.
