The same reason I (still) like vi.  I'm a pretty fast typist when my
fingers don't have to leave the home row.  Looking down and reaching for
the ctrl key slows me down appreciably.

so in short, yes, the ctrl key is too hard to find :-).

An alternative for us vi users might be to use an escape-space.  I find
the escape key easier to hit without looking since it's kind of off by
itself.
